ENHANCING THE RIGHTS OF MINORS: NEW OPPORTUNITIES OF NON- FORMAL EDUCATION IN THE SOUTH OF LEBANON

December 7, 2016, 24 members of different cooperatives in the south of Lebanon attended the first day of training dedicated to agricultural and food processing cooperatives, held at training center of the association “Jihad Al-Binaa” located in the hills at the back of Tyre. This training introduced concepts of good practice for agriculture and food processing.

During the following weeks, more days of trainings will be delivered by the local experts in hygiene and foods processing that cooperate with our project, at the offices of the cooperatives and consortia that adhere to this initiative. Topics include different local products and their processing, such as honey, olive oil, jams and pickles, milk and cheese.

This activity is the first phase of a program with a double aim of improving the quality of products and promotes the healthy nutritional value of the local products in the schools. At a later stage, indeed, classes of student from grade 7 to 9 will go to visit the cooperatives, within the framework of the program aiming at promoting healthy nutrition among students. The South of Lebanon is rich of high quality natural products, typical of Mediterranean area, that are the base of the traditional diet. Promoting the nutritional value of these products among adolescents is important to tackle the rising number of alimentary disorders caused by the excessive consumption of highly processed industrial food.
